Adoption: Surviving the Wait for Your Baby

I have been pregnant for 18 monthswell, paper pregnant that is. For those of us adopting, you know what I mean. While completing the paperwork that makes this beautiful process possible was at times frustrating, at least running back and forth to the notary public kept me busy and provided a feeling that I was still somewhat in control. But once all the paperwork was successfully navigated and back into the agency's handsI stepped back, took a deep breath and realized all that was left to do is wait. Now you'd think that would be the easy part, but for myself and many other adoptive parents, the waiting and uncertainty of when you will meet your child for the first time can border on unbearable. To help you get through your wait a little easier, here are ten things you can do. Focus on what you already have. To be in the position to adopt, I bet you already have many things for which to be thankful. When I start feeling discouraged, I count my blessings and remember that the wait will eventually come to an end and once we have our daughter she will be part of our family forever.Create a memory book. Write down your thoughts and feelings, write letters to your child, about current events from your home country or if you are adopting internationally, from your child's birth country. Include drawings from other siblings. Your child would be very interested to see the book you created for them one day. There is even on demand publishing available so you can actually have your work bound and turned into a professional looking book. Volunteer to work with children. You'll feel good about it and it will give you the opportunity to get some experience if you are a first time parent.Save money. Adopting costs money and so does raising a child. Extra money will always come in useful. It's never too early to start saving for college!Clean house. Take time to really clean and get organized. Once your baby is here, you'll have better things to do. Getting organized now will allow you to spend more time with your child later.Take parenting classes. Local hospitals often sponsor parenting classes or consider an adoption preparation workshop to help you learn what to expect and how to handle any special needs your child may have or develop. Learning infant CPR is also a good idea. You can find a local class by contacting the American Red Cross.Take one last vacation as a couple. All rightso my husband and I have taken three "last vacations" as a childless couple--but we had a great time on each of them. If you are waiting for your first baby, spend time as a couple enjoying one another's company completely free of any parenting responsibilities. If you have other children at home, it may be nice to all get away and spend quality time as a family since traveling might become more difficult with a new baby in the home.Learn about your child's culture. If you are adopting internationally or a child from a culture different than your own, you may want to consider learning about their country's history and traditions. You can plan fun ways to incorporate their native country's traditions into your own. Learning a bit of your child's native country's language might also be useful, especially if you will be traveling there.Plan and decorate the nursery. Some future parents don't want to walk by a decorated nursery until they are close to Adoption Day. If you would prefer to hold off on decorating, consider gathering ideas from magazines so when the time is right, you can proceed knowing exactly what you want.Start childproofing your home. Children will get into everything so walk through every room and identify all potential hazards. Sit on the floor as well to see the room from a child's vantage point and look for any dangers you may have missed. Read up on the latest safety products you may not be familiar with. Cynthia Smith owns and operates Mother Earth Nursery Designs, an online boutique specializing in organic and healthy products for babies and their nursery. She is working to promote awareness of organic fabrics and their benefits for babies and the environment.

TEXAN JOINS PEACE DELEGATION TO IRAQ From Middle Class to the Middle East

(Austin, Texas)---One of Texas' own leaders will be traveling to Iraq at the end of October as part of an international peace delegation. Charlie Jackson, a business leader with a middle-class lifestyle and father of two young sons, will join with delegates from Voices in the Wilderness as part of the Iraq Peace Team http://www.iraqpeaceteam.org/. He will be representing Texas as a delegate of Texans for Peace http://www.texansforpeace.org.This is the third international peace action that Mr. Jackson has been involved in. During the wars in Bosnia, Charlie traveled that country twice (1993 and 1995) to interpose and provide humanitarian aid to the victims. He has also been involved in a variety of International projects in addition to his work as an entrepreneur and member of the Austin high-tech community. His commitment to nonviolence and peacemaking comes from strong religious faith traditions and belief in democratic principles of fairness and justice. For thousands of years people of have fought wars because they either thought their neighbors would attack them or they wanted their neighbors milk and honey'. But in all of that time, victories' have only been shortlived. If we are to make the world for our children better, we're going to need to find new ways to do it, says Charlie. He adds, the U.S. cannot reach the ideals that we hold dear while at the same time killing innocent people around the world and that's reason enough to go to Iraq! Mr. Jackson plans to leave for Iraq on October 28 and stay until the end of November. While there he will visit with local families, teachers, and businesspeople. He hopes to educate them to the fact that not all Americans are pro-war and gain insight to their viewpoints to bring --More"those stories back to Texas. In the event of U.S. bombing Charlie says, I will stay with the people there and give comfort where possible. To me the children that I meet are no less precious than my own sons.Voices in the Wilderness was started in 1994 in response to the sanctions that, over time, have been directly responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of children and adults. Voices has challenged these sanctions by delivering embargoed goods such as medicine and infant vitamins and demonstrate solidarity with those who suffer in that country in the tradition of Mohandas Gandhi. The organization is composed of teachers, social workers, business people, and religious leaders and has sent over 40 delegations to Iraq since 1996. Now, with war on the horizon, Voices and the Iraq Peace Team have pledged to send seasoned nonviolence workers to take up positions in Iraq and be with ordinary people during any aggression directed to them. Between his work and family responsibilities, Mr. Jackson is currently traveling throughout Texas giving presentations that put a human face to the suffering in Iraq with photos and stories brought back from prior delegations. He is available for speaking with groups who are interested in learning more about Iraq from first-hand perspective and also for those who have interests in peace and nonviolence activities. For additional information you can visit the Texans for Peace website http://www.texansforpeace.org. --Attachments"Brief Statement on IraqStatement on Iraq " Texans for PeacePhoto (Charlie Jackson)--End--

The Pros And Cons Of Domestic Adoptions

There are two main types of adoptions, namely domestic adoptions and international adoptions. In this article we are going to be specifically looking at the pros and cons of domestic adoptions. The first advantage of domestic adoptions is that the cost for adopting a child is often less than for international adoptions. If you are going through your state domestic adoptions can cost very little. In addition the travel costs for domestic adoptions are greatly reduced.Another of the pros of domestic adoptions is the fact that generally very little, if any, travel is required. For international adoptions long periods overseas may be required and this could mean time away from other family members, work, and other home comforts. One of the pros of domestic adoptions for many couples is the ability to get a newborn baby. Due to the time required to complete an international adoption, a couple will not generally have this choice if they are adopting internationally. The cons of domestic adoptions include the fact that the procedural requirements are generally stricter and may also include going to a large number of classes for adoptive parents. There may also be less availability of children when considering domestic adoptions as compared to international adoptions, especially if you want a child from a minority race group.Other cons to domestic adoptions include the fact that the birth mother may change her mind about who she wants to adopt her child up until quite a late stage. Although this generally does not happen after the adoption has taken place it can happen after the adoptive parents are expecting the child and so get disappointed by suddenly losing the child they were expecting. The domestic adoption process also often includes putting together a parents' profile which includes photos of the prospective family for the birth mother to choose. For some families this may present problems, for example, if the prospective parents are slightly older (or look older) or feel that something in their appearance would cause them to be discarded as an option then they may prefer to go for an international adoption where this is not necessary and the birth mother or those deciding on who the child is to go to do not get to see the photos of the parents beforehand. In conclusion, there are pros and cons to domestic adoptions. Domestic adoptions are generally cheaper than international adoptions, less travel is included and one is able to adopt a newborn baby. The cons of domestic adoptions include the fact that there may be less availability of children, the procedural requirements are harsher and the birth mother may change her mind quite late in the procedure about who she wants to adopt her child. When considering domestic adoptions versus international adoptions it is important to take these factors into consideration.Your last option for recourse is simply to adopt an older child. Adoptive parents and adopted children can often form bonds that are just as strong as those formed between biological parents and children, even when the child is older and has a better idea of what is going on.

How to Choose a Car Seat That Meets The Needs of Your Baby

There are many types of car seats available on the market today. In order to be able to make an informed decision it is best to check out car seat manufacturers. You can also check any consumer guide for information on recalls, seats that have been crash tested, the best type of restraint systems for your child. Before that even starts be aware of the fact that there are many types of car seats. The choice you make will be based on your prior research and your child's needs. A note of caution: before you purchase a car seat check the manufacture's recommendations and be sure the seat is compatible with your vehicle. One type of car seat is the infant only car seat. This seat comes with a detachable base, comes with higher weight and height limits, harness slots that will help to change the seat from rear facing to front facing. The multiple slots can be adjusted to fit your baby. They also have handles that can be folded down while the child is in the car. They can be raised to make carrying your baby easier.Convertible car seats are bigger and heavier and may not be appropriate for some newborns. The reclining position and ease of adjusting the harness are important assets. A convertible seat can be used rear facing for most newborns and front facing for older babies over twenty pounds. The American Pediatric Association recommends a child stay rear facing until s/he reaches the maximum weight and height listed by the manufacturer. The straps and are adjustable to a child's size, the seat should be moved to the proper position for the weight and height of your baby. The seat belt should be threaded through the seat belt path.Forward facing seats cannot be used in the rear facing position. They are only for children over a year old and over twenty pounds. They can be used with either a lap only or lap/shoulder belt system.Combination seats also cannot be used in the rear facing position and are also only for babies over a year and over twenty pounds. It has an internal harness for children whose weight is between forty and fifty pounds. It can convert to a belt position booster seat by removing the harness for larger children. They can be used with lap only or lap/shoulder belts.Booster seats come in different types. Some come with shield boosters that are padded bars that lock into position much like the handlebars on carnival rides. There are booster seats that come with a high back to support your child as s/he rides in a car. Some booster car seats are built into vans and some cars. Check with your vehicle manufacturer to be sure the seat will accommodate your child's size. There are travel vests that attach to the seats with lap only belts. Now that you know the types of car seats, there are things that must be considered in order to ensure the safety of your baby. Is the seat safe? How did it fare in crash testing? Is the restraint system easy to manipulate? If they are difficult to buckle your child in or remove him from the seat your child's safety could be compromised. In an accident, a sudden stop, or quick swerve will the seat hold your child? If the seat moves in any way in these situations your baby could be at risk. The car seat should attach snugly to the seat if properly installed. With seats that have multiple belt slots to accommodate your child be sure you use the right one. The belt should be at your child's shoulder level or just above. Most newer car seats come with the LATCH (lower anchor and tethers for children) system. Installation is supposed to be easier but they are difficult to use and are not always safe. Parents complain that upon installing seats with this system there is too much slack, the seats have a tendency to move or slide out of position. In an emergency situation this could have seriously disastrous results. A company has created a tool called Mighty Tite that is used to pull in the slack and it has been safety tested and is recommended. As previously stated check consumer guides and online sites for recalls. This is especially important if you have a used car seat. If you purchase your seat second-hand you need to inspect it thoroughly. Check that all belts and buckles are in good shape and working as recommended. Make sure the belts aren't frayed or the buckles cracked. Check the frame for any breaks or gaps that your little one could get fingers stuck in or that are sharp. If you find such things don't use the seat until you can get it repaired or replaced. If the seat comes with removable covers it is suggested that you remove them and wash them well. If it doesn't have cloth covering you might want to buy some. A vinyl seat, could in the summer, burn your little one's tender skin. In a desperate attempt to remedy this when my own child was an infant, I found a large towel and cut holes in it and place it on the seat so that anywhere my son's skin would meet the seat, it was protected at least with the towel. If you are really creative you could make your own.Be practical in purchasing your car seat. If you have an infant buy a seat that will convert to a front facing seat as your child grows. Infant seats also come with a base that remains installed while you are able to remove a sleeping child from the car without disturbing him too much. Some such infant seats can also attach to a stroller frame. This multi-use seat is practical and will save all the bending and unbuckling and buckling of seat belts and then stroller belts. The internal harness keeps your child appropriately restrained.Let's go over some important considerations in purchasing car seats. Keep in mind compatibility with your vehicle's specifications. Check for recalls and safety testing- how did the seat fare in these situations? Is it the proper seat for the size of your child? Can the seat be converted from a rear and front facing seat - it is more economical to buy a convertible seat. Is the installation easy or does the seat seem to move around in the belt system? There is a tool called Mighty Tite that can take up any slack and make the seat secure in its position, thus enhancing your baby's safety. Choose carefully and choose wisely, you are carrying very precious cargo.

Nurture Basics, Inc. Launches Next-Generation Early Child Development Program, "Play Along With Me!", An Interactive Toy-Based Learning System That Emphasizes Bonding

February 11 2004--More than four million babies are born in the U.S. each year; and, recent media and medical community reports show that child development psychologists, day-care providers, educators, infant-learning experts, and pediatricians agree that there's a critical window of opportunity for brain growth which occurs in a child's first three years of life. During this time, experts say, parents/caregivers play a crucial role in a child's development, and babies need good, positive human interaction and touch, as well as ample opportunities to play and explore.Responding to the need for an early child development toy-based program that engages infants and toddlers with their parents/caregivers, U.S.-based Nurture Basics, Inc. (www.NurtureBasics.com) introduces Play Along With Me!, the next generation in a growing genre of educational products intended to stimulate a child's brain development. "Play Along with Me!" is an interactive, entertaining, toy-based program for children ages birth to three years that provides rich educational content, encourages shared experiences between child and parent/caregiver, and incorporates the direct, dynamic involvement of the parent/caregiver to help the child explore and learn.According to Lynn Wadelton, Ph.D., of First Coast Therapy Group, Inc. in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida: 'Play Along With Me!' is a superior child development program that is interesting for babies, teaches appropriate developmental and social tasks, includes actual child and adult models for children to imitate, shows parents how to interact in positive, fun, and educational ways with their children, includes actual toys used in the videos and music CDs, and is active rather than passive. She added, This program is perfect for the needs of infants and toddlers."Play Along With Me!" is a complete, multi-media kit that combines parent/caregiver interaction with audio, visual, and tactile stimulation in order to strengthen emotional bonding and enhance cognitive, social, motor, and English language skills along infants' and toddlers' natural stages of development. Packaged with a tote bag for easy storing and traveling, Play Along With Me! includes more than 40 toys -- all of which are shown in the kit's three videos (also available as DVDs) -- along with three music CDs featuring more than 30 original songs, and an easy-to-follow guidebook for parents/caregivers with song lyrics, safety tips, and suggestions on how to use the program. It is the only product on the early child development market that includes all the toys featured in its songs and videos. Additionally, each toy has been safety-tested according to both ASTM and Canadian standards, and approved for children of all ages to use.Created with guidance from language and early child development experts, "Play Along With Me!" has been successfully used for more than five years throughout Asia to teach English as well as for early child development. Now, for the first time, this program is available in North America. At Nurture Basics, our goal is to promote an atmosphere of integrated child and parent/caregiver bonding through playful education and positive one-on-one interaction in the early stages of a child's development, said Tamara Ujiie, Founder and CEO of Nurture Basics. We saw the need for a program like 'Play Along With Me!' based on our own experiences as parents, she continued, also, after working for the product's distributor in Japan and seeing its successes across Asia, we determined that the benefits transcended simple language acquisition; furthermore, we felt that babies and parents/caregivers in the U.S. and Canada deserved the opportunity to experience this wonderful product.Nurture Basics will initially offer "Play Along With Me!", its flagship product, to consumers, retailers, and specialty toy stores throughout North America via its Website, www.NurtureBasics.com, and mail-order catalogues, in addition to partnering with national e-commerce distributors. Also, the company will be a new exhibitor at the upcoming American International TOY FAIR -- open only to toy and retail trade, and press -- taking place at New York City's Jacob K. Javits Convention Center Sunday, Feb. 15 through Wednesday, Feb. 18 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, except on the final day when exhibits will close at 4 p.m. Following the American International TOY FAIR, Nurture Basics will exhibit at a series of trade shows taking place throughout California. The American International TOY FAIR is the perfect venue for introducing 'Play Along With Me!' to toy and retail trade audiences, said Andrew Ujiie, President of Nurture Basics. He continued, We're confident that 'Play Along With Me!' will quickly become recognized across North America as one of the best new toy-based programs for early child development, not only because of its superior quality, but also because it's a complete kit that's easy and fun to useall parents or caregivers have to do is play along!Based in Irvine, Calif., Nurture Basics, Inc. was created to provide parents and caregivers with enriching, educational content and tools that enable them to easily engender interactive, nurturing experiences for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. Amtrak's Low Fares - Seven Tips to Receive Discounted Fares on Amtrak Train Trips

The National Railroad Passenger Corporation was created by Congress in 1970 to take over the passenger rail services previously required to be operated by private freight railroad companies in the United States. Those companies reported they had operated the services without profit for over a decade. The vast majority of passenger rail routes in existence at that time were shut down to focus the service on the most heavily used lines. The popular nickname "Amtrak" was created as a blend of the words "America" and "track." Amtrak provides a number of discount fare programs to entice prospective passengers and their families on their trains. Each of theseven deals listed below are subject to the following rules:1. Hepatitis B - Symptoms, Treatment and Prevention

Hepatitis B is a viral disease of the liver that occurs throughout the world. International travelers may be at risk and should discuss hepatitis B vaccination with their travel doctors. What is hepatitis B?Hepatitis B is viral disease that affects the liver. It is caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). While most patients recover fully, it can lead to cirrhosis of the liver and liver cancer. It occurs in certain populations in the United States, but is a much more widespread health issue worldwide. Experts estimate that about 1 million Americans are infected with HBV. In contrast, there are about 350 million people worldwide with hepatitis B, including nearly 700,000 yearly fatalities. International travelers may be at risk of contracting hepatitis B depending upon their immune status and their destinations. How is hepatitis B transmitted?Hepatitis B is transmitted from contaminated blood, semen and bodily fluids. This is why blood for transfusions or organs to be transplanted is carefully tested for the presence of HBV (and many other diseases) to protect the recipients. Hepatitis B is a sexually transmitted disease. Newborns can contract the virus if the mother has hepatitis B.What are the symptoms?Hepatitis B symptoms include fever, fatigue, nausea, vomiting and joint pains. A characteristic symptom is jaundice when the eyes and skin turn yellow. Jaundice develops gradually and is rarely noticed by the infected person himself. All of these symptoms are called non-specific, meaning that they can occur in many other diseases also. This disease is not nearly as contagious as hepatitis A, which spreads from person to person much more easily. HBV infected people can have silent infections and can still transmit the disease to others. Fortunately, most hepatitis B patients recover fully, but a minority never clear the infection and can develop chronic medical complications. After complete recovery, the individual is immune to hepatitis B infection for life. A minority of hepatitis B patients have progressive disease. Liver transplantation has been performed to save hepatitis B patients with liver failure whose survival is in jeopardy. There are also individuals who never clear the HBV, but yet they never develop any illness. These people are called hepatitis B carriers. How is hepatitis B diagnosed? If your doctor suspects that you have hepatitis B, then there are accurate blood tests available to establish the diagnosis. Is treatment available?Viral diseases generally are not treated with specific medications like antibiotics. Nearly all patients recover fully from hepatitis B, although the illness can last for months. After recovery, the individual is immune from future hepatitis B infection. There are special medications available for patients who do not clear the hepatitis B virus and develop liver disease. Can hepatitis B be prevented?Definitely. There is a safe and effective vaccine available that provides excellent protection. It is currently recommended to all infants in order to protect them from future infections of HBV. International travelers may be at risk and should discuss hepatitis B vaccination with their travel doctors. Ideally, this should occur months before departure, but even last minute vaccination can offer protection. Individuals can also reduce their risk by engaging only in safe sex practices and not sharing razors and toothbrushes with individuals known to be infected.

Hepatitis A, Symptoms, Treatment & Vaccinations

International travelers need protection against hepatitis A. This viral infection is contagious, common and preventable with an effective vaccine. Travelers should consult with a travel physician to learn how to minimize their risk. What is hepatitis A?Hepatitis A is a viral infection that infects the liver. It is common in many parts of the world and poses risks for international travelers. Illness severity is variable and most patients make complete recoveries. How is hepatitis A transmitted? This disease is transmitted when an individual ingests food or drink that is contaminated with microscopic amounts of infected feces. Physicians and scientists use the term fecal-oral transmission to describe this pathway. For example, travelers in a restaurant can become infected if a cook or a waiter did not practice adequate hygiene after using the rest room. Diners can also become infected if the food was contaminated prior to delivery to the restaurant. Food and beverages that are more likely to harbor the virus include fruits, vegetables, shellfish, ice and water. In the United States and other countries, chlorination eliminates Hepatitis A in the water supply. Fecal-oral transmission can occur in other settings. For example, if an infant is infected with the virus, then anyone who changes a diaper or bathes the child is at risk of contracting Hepatitis A. Finally, certain sexual practices can transmit the hepatitis virus. What are the symptoms?Hepatitis A symptoms include fever, fatigue, nausea, vomiting and joint pains. A characteristic symptom is jaundice when the eyes and skin turn yellow. Jaundice develops gradually and is rarely noticed by the infected person himself. All of these symptoms are called non-specific, meaning that they can occur in many other diseases also. Many people who are infected with hepatitis A have no symptoms at all. These individuals, however, can still spread the disease to others. How is hepatitis A diagnosed? If your doctor suspects that you have hepatitis A, then there are accurate blood tests available to establish the diagnosis. Is treatment available?Viral diseases generally are not treated with specific medications like antibiotics. Nearly all patients recover fully, although the illness can last for weeks or longer. After recovery, the individual is immune from future hepatitis A infection. Can hepatitis A be prevented?Definitely yes! The most effective strategy is vaccination. Hepatitis vaccine is strongly recommended to individual at risk including travelers to parts of the developing world where this infection is common. Even last minute travelers should receive the vaccine as they will still receive protection. Ideally, travelers should meet with a travel physician months before departure to discuss vaccinations against hepatitis A and other a preventable illnesses. Travelers should also be very cautious about where they dine, avoiding questionable establishments where sanitary conditions may be suspect. What if I am exposed to Hepatitis A?See your doctor. Depending upon the time of exposure and other circumstances, your doctor may advise the hepatitis A vaccine and other treatments. Of course, if you've already been vaccinated, then you are protected.

Up, Up and Away

Have you flown on an airplane recently? The security lines are longer. We are interrogated, searched and told to undress.Liquids have to be packed inside our checked in luggage or else they are confiscated.Any toiletries to be carried on the airplane must fit in a four ounce Ziploc bag.We are exhausted before we set foot on a plane. There are similarities and differences between procedures for domestic and international air travel at US metropolitan airports. Before we go "Up, Up, and Away", we will provide you with information about the ticket counter, x-ray area, and the departure gate. The Ticket Counter is the beginning of our trip where we show our identification and e-ticket. We need to adhere to the individual carrier's baggage requirements which are up to 50 pounds per bag for domestic and international flights. In addition, the piece or pieces of luggage needs to be unlocked.Quite a number of the domestic airlines charge for luggage placed in the baggage compartment of the plane. In addition, each individual airline has its own rules governing your luggage.Arrival time recommendations vary by airline and day of travel, so check with your carrier. Remember to give yourself adequate time to check your baggage and move through security. The X-Ray areais our second information check point where we are either instructed to bring our luggage to an x-ray counter and watch it go through the x-ray process. Hand luggage and personal items are x-rayed.Most carriers permit one piece of hand luggage and one personal item such as a laptop.Film should go in your carry-on bag. Do you have a gift to carry? Please do not take it wrapped. If a security officer needs to inspect a package, he or she may have to un-wrap our gift. If there are any specific questions, we need to contact the individual airline carrier. We are also asked to remove our shoes, coat, suit jacket and purse and place them in one or more bins provided at the station and then put them through the x-ray machine for inspection. We need to try to pack our coats and jackets in your checked baggage when possible. We could wear slip-on shoes. This will allow us to take them off and put them back on quickly. We also need to remove all animals from their carrying cases and send the cases through the X-ray machine. We need to hold our pet in our arms and proceed through the metal detector.Infants and children need to be removed from baby carriers and strollers and take them through the metal detector with you. Strollers and baby carriers go through the X-ray machine with your bags. If possible, collapse your stroller before you get to the metal detector. We may also be asked to remove jewelry and coins, depending on the sensitivity of the scanning equipment. We are also required to remove our laptop from its case and lay it flat in one of the bins.We will may also have to be searched by a metal detector receive a possible pat down inspection.Items that might set off an alarm on the metal detector include:Keys, loose change, cell phones, pagers, and personal data assistants (PDAs) or smart phones Heavy jewelry (including pins, necklaces, bracelets, rings, watches, earrings, body piercings, cuff links, lanyards or bolo ties) Clothing with metal buttons, snaps or studs Metal hair barrettes or other hair decoration Belt buckles Under-wire bras Head coverings and religious garments are acceptable during the screening process. You may be directed to additional screening if your headwear or clothing (religious or otherwise) is loose fitting or large enough to hide prohibited items. There are additional TSA requirements to follow called "3-1-1" requirement which means the following: It stands for 3 ounces or less in a one quart-sized clear zip-lock bag.One bag per passenger is placed in the screening tray. The definition is the following: a 3.4 ounce bottle or less (by volume) ; 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin which limits the total liquid volume each traveler can bring. Obviously, this is a security measure. Each time TSA searches a carry-on it slows down the line.We need to declare larger liquids.Medications, baby formula and food, and breast milk are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding three ounces and are not required to be in the zip-top bag. We also need to declare these items for inspection at the checkpoint. Heavy travel volumes and the enhanced security process may mean longer lines at security checkpoints. Departure Gate identification and boarding passes are still necessary for all flights.A passport for international flights or a drivers' license for domestic flights is required in addition to your boarding pass. Once we arrive to our European destination, passports are rarely checked if we remain in the terminal for other European locales.Planes don't always drive up to the gate; we may be required to take the assigned bus transportation to our gate. The decision is dependent on available parking spaces at the hanger. Our luggage is checked through to our final destination. If we are taking another flight, we will go through hand luggage security and then show our passport before taking our flight. But, here is the caveat for international travel:Did you know that meals served on all international (non-American airlines) flights are hot and complimentary inclusive of all liquor? In addition, most international airlines have individual, integrated entertainment seen on a TV monitor. I am led to each checkpoint with friendly personnel at the Los Angeles International Airport, but, I noticed that there is no consistency with the rules and regulations for each carrier. In addition, safety enforcements increase or decrease depending on our security status.I have noticed, though that the international airports have less security especially while traveling within the European community (EU). Hopefully, travel information will now be more comprehensible. "Up, Up, and Away" should have provided you with information about the ticket counter, x-ray area, and the departure gate.

International Adoptions - Feel Proud

To decide to take in a child through adoption is a special thing. It is a difficult thing to choose to raise someone else's child. You might feel that taking a child into your home that is of another race, from a different country, or another culture, makes it even harder. Notwithstanding, there are thousands of individuals and couples who are choosing to be blessed by adoption within a year's time. Why do they do it? Why is it good to take a child from another country?Extras for choice, Extras to LoveIn your area, the amount of babies for adoption is not so large. With the new ways to prevent pregnancy there are fewer babies being born who are not want. The amount of mothers who are all right with giving the child up for adoption is also declining. Babies are not as easy to find. The wait for an infant could take up more time than you want it to. This is not the case for children in other countries. The wait for one of these babies is not as long because of the need for parents. You will be able to get the baby of your dreams. You can answer the child truthfully when you tell them that you chose them and you love them deeply.Shorter Wait TimesAdopting internationally brings about a wait time of a year to a year and a half. This might seem to be a long time but it does not compete with the time you have been without a child or the time it takes to adopt a local child. With all the requirements, a year is not anything. bNobody's perfectSince the need is so large, there are certain things you are required to do before taking in an area child. Those without children are first on the list. You might need to have a problem with infertility before being considered. The age limit is 25 to 35 years old. The idea is that you need to be very healthy and have a spouse. In addition, birth moms are able to decide what kind of parents their child will have, and their choice is for a couple that is married, not old, and college educated with a good paying job and an active life. Adoptions from other countries are not as narrow minded. You can have up to seven other children, be over forty, and not have a large income. If you can show the ability to love and to be able to give the child a nicer home than what was given before, international services are willing to let you try and are appreciative. The Child Is YoursInternational children are normally not available unless they have no parents. This provides you with three important things.1. There are no parents to come up and change their minds later.2. The child is yours forever. 3. The child will not have a need to find their birth parents. For custody issues, having an adopted child is like having a birth child. The Globe Is a Large PlaceWhen taking in an international child, you take in the culture also. It becomes like your own because this is the place that gave you your special gift. You open yourself up to the greatness of things learned about the country in which your child comes. Every part of her is now a part of you. Her family is your family and the ones whom you will ultimately find in your travels will be your friends. It will be no question where your next vacation will be!

Travel Packing List For Babies

It is complicated to predict everything you may need on a spree with a newborn. You most likely won't want most of the added things you'll be stuffing, but if its a necessity, you'll dread the thought of leaving without it.Packing the Bare EssentialsOkay, so you are perhaps going to need a lot of baby food, pacifiers, diapers, formula, and some clothes for changing, and so on, right? Horde all that things, but pack twice that amount in so far as you think youll need. You'll wish to take all you need to make your baby at ease and portable all through your trip. Definitely, get the car seat on top of your childs much loved sling or carrier - plus a baby carriage that is compressed and disintegrates easily. You particularly won't wish to hold back on on diapers. Bundle plenty of wipes, too, as they are brilliant for cleaning up and wiping sticky hands. A tiny container of hand disinfectant should come in handy, also. You'll want to ensure you have ample of refreshments for your kids, plus some protein-based munchies for you. I constantly hide a bag of uncooked nuts in my handbag. From time to time, if I have been too hectic to eat a full meal, these are precisely what I could do with to get me throughout to the next time I can be seated down for a minute. Walnuts, cashews, and pecans are perfect. Trail mix is wonderful for this, as well.A reminder on baby formula when traveling by plane: As of this point in time while I was writing this article, airports will not let citizens to carry in excess of three ounces of a liquid on a plane in their hand carried luggage. They might make an exemption for baby formula, but don't rely on it. It's advisable to carry powdered formula and blend it with warm water on the plane. The flight stewardess should be agreeable to give bottled water and boil it up for you.Packing the Not-so Bare EssentialsApparently, you can pay no attention to a few of this things if it doesn't concern to your travel plans, but don't miss out on anything else.Amusement for your BabyRegardless of your baby's age, she will end up getting really, really bored stiff on extended car rides or plane trip. Make an effort to plan travel around your childs nap or sleeping hours, but don't rely on it to work out flawlessly. Carry toys, activity books, and anything else your kid loves to have fun with. You might feel like surprising her with a few latest toys just for the trip, as well.Kids PassportDon't overlook that all children (even newborns) have to have passports before they can fly internationally.Emergency KitToss your full baby medicine cabinet in your handbag, together with rubbing alcohol and band-aids for minor cuts, and ensure your baby is accurately vaccinated prior to taking off. We all have a resistance built up to local viruses, but traveling lengthy distances can set up the immune system to latest diseases. Be ready. Tell your physician where you're leaving and ask for the necessary vaccines.A Good BookThis item is for you. Most time used up in traveling with an infant is going to be devoted to comforting your child's strain from the continuous changes. Babies can take pleasure in traveling, but it's taxing nevertheless, so you may fancy having a good book at hand for lengthy stretches of cuddling and snoozing.

International Baby Adoption

If you are considering an international baby adoption, then you will need to also find a reputable agency to help guide you through the paperwork and process. In addition, when some families are hoping for a baby adoption, they employ the help of an attorney.International adoptions are often fast and can be completed in as little 10 to 14 months from the time of application. The majority of children who are eligible for adoption are newborns, who were usually separated from their birth mother within a few days after birth. At that time, they are placed in foster care until the adoption process is complete. In addition to newborn infants, there are also sometimes older children who are seeking adoption. Most baby adoption agencies, who help to handle international adoptions, will consider an application from either a married couple or a single woman, who is an adult and has completed a successful home study. In addition, most adoptions are given to individuals and/or families who are both emotionally and financially stable. The number of current children that an individual has, if any, is not usually a deciding factor when it comes to international baby adoption. As a general rule, once the adoption process is finalized, the parent(s) is required to travel to their new child's country in order to pick them up. This generally takes 2 to 3 days before the paperwork is finalized and the child is allowed to exit the country. The fee for baby adoption will vary from one country to the next and will largely depend on each's policy.Due to strict immigration laws and all of the paperwork involved, individuals considering an international baby adoption should consult a local attorney. Some families have also consulted with international attornies with great success. This will help to ensure that all paperwork and other required procedures are done properly in order to avoid delays with the baby adoption and the return home. The attorney will often be required to accompany the adopting family to pick up the child and to finalize the details of the adoption. This will help protect the rights of the new parent(s) and the child as well. All children who are adopted abroad, and have been in the custody of the adoptive family for a period of less than two years, are required to possess U.S. immigrant orphan petitions and orphan visas before entering the United States. This process typically requires that the adoptive parent(s) be found suitable for adoption, an investigation into the status of the child be completed and finalization of the visa application.

Travelling safely with child car seats

When travelling in a car you should always respect the law and respect your own safety as well as that of others by wearing a seatbelt at all times. It is important that everyone wears a seatbelt when driving as many shocking television adverts and evidence have show that even a passenger in the rear of a car can be badly harmed or cause worse fatalities to the buckled in driver and front passenger.Often, seatbelts are designed with adults in mind and can sometimes cause trouble for small children travelling in the back. For this reason there are a wide range of child seats for all ages. For older children in many cases the main issue is that they are too short for the seatbelt to be placed in the correct position. Booster seats much like you can get at cinemas or in hairdressers, can elevate the child to the proper height and so the seatbelt will protect the child rather than cause potential harm. With smaller children especially babies, specialist child seats need to be used. In recent years many of these have come under scrutiny from various safety groups as some were found to not be safe for children in the event of an accident. When choosing a child seat you need to choose the right one for the child who will be using it, they tend to come in three sizes: Newborn, Infant and Toddler.Newborn car seats look a lot like general baby carrying baskets; they have a great level of protection for babies and can be front or rear facing.Toddler and infant seats can look more like miniaturised car seats but have more complex harnesses to ensure that firstly a child cannot free themselves and move around the car but also provides the best protection in the event of a crash, the added harnesses spread the pressure from the seatbelt which could cause bruising or internal damage if the added harnesses were not there. All child car seats need to be secured to the car, this is normally done via the existing seatbelt and the car seat will connect to the seatbelt or to the underside of the seat cushion. When buying a car seat many retailers will demonstrate how to correctly fit the seat so you know how to properly attach the seat to your car. Once the car seat is secured, make sure that before any journey you test the tension on the seat, it shouldnt have much freedom to move or wobble around. A sharp pull on the seat imitating a frontal collision should be able to give you an idea of how secure the seat is.Be sure to check with car safety information sources or your local motoring shop as many of these stores will offer advice and free demonstrations when selecting your childs car seat so that you can rest assured that your child is safe when you are driving and you can keep your mind on the road.

The Pros And Cons Of International Adoption

If you are considering adopting a child one of the things you will need to look into is whether to go for domestic adoption or international adoption. In this article we will discuss the pros and cons of international adoption to give you more information in order to make a better informed decision.International adoption is generally done by an individual working through an agency (or perhaps a few adoption agencies) and it is often necessary to spend extended periods in the country from which you are adopting a child, usually between one and three weeks. Apart from the possible cons associated with the extended travel it is also often more costly to adopt a child from another country. These may include travel costs, legal costs and a number of other costs which your adoption agency should be able to inform you of.International adoption may also come with language and communication problems. If the child you are adopting has a different language to you then you may find it difficult to communicate at first and they may find it difficult adapting to a new language. Children adopted through international adoption are very seldom infants due to the longer adoption process and so they will usually have obtained some language skills in another language. On the positive side though, there is usually a greater availability of children through international adoption. Many countries are in desperate need of people to adopt children who have been orphaned, abandoned or whose parents are simply too poor to care for them. For example many children in Africa are left orphans due to the extent of the AIDS epidemic in Africa, and many girl babies are abandoned due to cultural and political reasons in China. In addition, the regulations and requirements for international adoption are often not as stringent as for domestic adoption. Domestic regulations may include requirements regarding the adoptive parents' ages, household situation, and the requirement to take a certain number of classes. These requirements are generally not as strict for international adoption. In international adoption the birth mother also does not change her mind. The problem with domestic adoption in many cases is the option for the birth mother to change her mind after prospective adoptive parents have been told they will get a child. In international adoptions this is not the case.In conclusion, there are pros and cons to both international adoption and domestic adoption, hopefully this article has given you a better understanding to know which option will be best suited to you and your lifestyles. International adoption may be a more expensive, lengthy process and perhaps have some language difficulties; but there are also a lot more children available, especially of different races or cultures, and the requirements are generally not as stringent and the birth mother won't change her mind about placing her child with you.

Tips For Traveling With The Tots

While many parents avoid traveling with young children, a bit of preparation can ensure a successful family vacation. By making a checklist of all your necessities and planning for any difficulties, you and your family can enjoy your vacation instead of worrying about what could go wrong. Here is a list of travel tips to help you prepare for your family vacation. By following some of these suggestions, you and your family will always remember your family vacation for all the right reasons. You certainly can't expect your children to be perfect, so set some reasonable expectations for your family vacation. Perhaps one of the best ways to keep your children interested throughout your family vacation is to involve them in the planning process. Your children will be excited to have a hand in the itinerary and will learn about the destination before you depart. Once you arrive, you can be confident that your kids won't complain about the chosen activities.Regarding air travel, you might want to try securing seats in the front row of the aircraft. The front row of seats will grant your family some extra space and privacy, which are especially helpful if traveling with infants or toddlers. Your children should also be able to wander with more ease at the front of the cabin, but ask the flight attendant if you aren't sure what is acceptable. While non-stop flights are recommended by many for family travel, a break can sometimes be useful. If your family is traveling to the Caribbean, an hour or two in an airport can take some of the edge off a long day. Not only will your children be able to walk around and stretch, you can also stock up on snacks and any items you may have forgotten. If you are traveling with older children, you might want to consider an early morning flight to prevent any delays. When flying with infants and younger children, many families prefer late night flights as they correspond with the child's natural sleep schedule. When traveling to the Caribbean or any other international location, pack all the medicines your children might need - both prescription and over-the-counter varieties. As many countries have different medicines than the U.S. and packaging may be considerably different, don't take any chances. Check the carry-on restrictions and pack whatever you can in your carry-on baggage. It is also a good idea to pack a change of clothes, a blanket and a pillow for your young ones to ensure that they are comfortable on the airplane. One of the greatest difficulties of family travel is the transport of large items like strollers and playpens. Before you leave for your trip, contact the concierge of your Caribbean resort regarding the availability of cribs, strollers, car seats or anything else your baby might need. If your hotel is unable to acquire any of these vacation essentials, there are a few international organizations that arrange delivery of such rental items.Organize a selection of toys like dolls, stuffed animals and books in one of your carry-on bags. To prevent any unnecessary embarrassment, try to avoid packing noise-making toys or those with small parts - like model kits, building blocks or board games. Portable DVD players and CD players can also keep your children occupied and entertained. It is also a good idea to pack some healthy snacks for your children, as it is often difficult to please with airline food.Your preparation should also include planning for unforeseen events, such as someone getting lost or sick. By planning all the small details - down to what type of trail mix to eat on the airplane - and more serious issues affecting your itinerary before you travel, you and your family won't have to spend your family vacation worrying. You will simply enjoy every minute of it.

International Women's Health Group To Hold First Fundraiser

PORTLAND, OR April 25, 2004--Women who live in war-torn regions of the world now get support from an organization who will travel to areas of the world such as Tibet, Afghanistan and Israel to provide women's healthcare services and trainings. Circle of Health International's mission is to support the empowerment of women living in conflict-affected situations around the globe by providing women's health initiatives. The group is hosting a fundraiser on May 3rd, 2004, 7:30pm at Ripe to raise money for their first project. We want to reach women who desperately need support, says Sera Bonds, Director, Women who have been forced to flee their homes, are living amidst terrible violence, and often with life-threatening health conditions deserve to have adequate, appropriate, and accessible health care. Our goal is to gently enter conflict-affected communities and work with community health workers and midwives to enhance their skill levels and improve their access to information. By doing so, we hope to support these brave women in transforming a horrific experience into something that empowers them, individually as well as collectively, as they heal themselves and their communities. Circle of Health International's first fieldwork project is scheduled for the summer of 2004 in Tibet. COHI is partnering with the Tibetan Poverty Alleviation Fund to assist them in completing several women's health projects presently underway. These projects focus on meeting the goals described in The Safe Motherhood Strategy and address issues such as lowering maternal and infant mortality rates by training health care providers to identify potential problems in delivery and referring women to clinics with supportive technology and medical staff. COHI is also researching potential partner organizations to offer HIV/AIDS education and prevention information within the commercial sex worker community in Lhasa, Tibet. Circle of Health International seeks to develop culturally specific and appropriate trainings to build upon the existing knowledge base of the community health workers and traditional midwives living in conflict-affected populations. By targeting these groups - and thus contributing to the skills development of the women directly affected by conflict " Circle of Health International hopes to support conflict-affected women in leading their communities into a post-conflict phase based on health and empowerment. Services Circle of Health International offer include: basic immunizations, nutritional information, family planning, hygiene support, HIV/AIDS trainings, public health information, post-abortion care, gender-based violence counseling, neonatal care, and delivery skills.Cost of dinner is $45/person - email to reserveTo request a reservation please contact Rhonda Robb atrhondarae@hotmail.comor by phone (503)282-0569. Passport Applications For 2007, 2008 - A Travel Guide For Us Citizens

Most who plan on traveling internationally probably know that new travel document requirements have been in place since January of 2007. Additionally, new regulations take effect in January of 2008. Here are some key considerations to make your preparations easier.PASSPORTS: Because of new regulations required by the Homeland Security Act, passports are now required for air travel in Western Hemisphere countries that were previously exempt. Beginning in January 2008 those regulations extend to land and sea travel as well.If you have never before obtained a passport, the procedures may be a little intimidating, but it's very simple if you thoroughly research and complete the requirements well ahead of your anticipated travel date. Waiting too late and having to hurry or pay extra for expedited service simply adds to the pressure and the costs. Consider the following steps and resources. Begin the process of obtaining a passport and required visas well in advance of your travel date - by as much as 6 months. Thoroughly research passport and visa requirements. Do not assume anything. Requirements may change without much warning. Obtain the application, one for each member of the family that is traveling, including children and infants. As always, check the most up-to-date sources because requirements change. Ask questions. The applications may be obtained from many US Post Offices but must be delivered only to specified US Post Offices. See below for the link to the official US government site for specifics. Obtain 2 official passport pictures. Most portrait photographers can supply these, including Wal-Mart Stores that maintain a photography studio. Some US Post offices also offer photography services. Save your money for the occasion. The total passport fee is just under $100, not including the passport pictures. If you have to expedite the process, costs may be 2 or 3 times as much.VISAS: Before you travel to a foreign country, check with the embassy or consulate of the country that you plan to visit. Ask specifically for their visa requirements. Be sure to mention the date of travel, because requirements change from time to time and you must comply with current regulations. The U.S. Department of State maintains a web site that contains information about visa requirements, but it may not be up to date.Again, this is something you want to start on early in your planning stages because it may take you a few weeks to contact the appropriate agency and to receive response back. If you are required to secure a visa, that too will take time.As with any official documents, when you receive them, check them carefully for accuracy. You do not want to be held up at the ticket counter or the customs gate because of what may seem to you to be an insignificant spelling or typo mistake. No mistakes are insignificant.Just a word of encouragement with documentation. Carry with you always your personal picture ID and birth certificate and copies of your required documentation. If you are for any reason stopped at a checkpoint because of some inconsistency in paperwork, additional copies and more-than-required documentation may save you time and hassle. And, last of all, looking at the overall picture, a very low percentage of travelers experience any problems with documentation. Follow the requirements. Do not attempt to skip steps, and you'll be just fine.

Whats The Future Of Air Travel?

Air travel is great when it works, when it doesn't, it's a nightmare. It is safe for infants, even newborns and no matter where you're going, it seems air travel is an essential part of your trip. One reason why there is such fast growth is that air travel was under-priced until higher fuel prices came along but yet demand for air travel is at its highest levels since 9/11. It is governed by International, European and Domestic legislation and even private corporate air travel is now accessible. Traveling by air is the fastest way to travel but it is still very tiresome but is frequently the most practical method of covering the large distances between sights around the world. A century after the very first flight, air travel is no longer a miracle, it's something we all now take for granted. Commercial air travel is a comfortable, speedy and a safe means of transport like buses in the sky. This pattern is not seen for all airlines in all regions. Aloha Airlines received the fewest complaints for any airlines recently. Different airlines have different policies but they all make them as safe and profitable as possible. When it comes to prices now a days, the best deals are offered by Aeroflot, Quantas Airlines, Japan Airlines and Southwest Airlines. More and more airlines are cutting out a lot of their business class air travel and sticking with just coach and first class flights because business travel is way down. Some airlines are better than others at providing a quality air travel experience but there are so many flights to chose from. That's why the member airlines of the Air Transport Association have set forth their commitment to improving air travel and making it as safe as can be. With the geography of aviation and airports, air travel is a fascinating subject since it involves the immediate movement of people around the globe. Canada's new government announces increased security measures for airports and air travel. European airports are handling the second largest air travel market in the world and are talking positively about their future. Whether on a domestic or a multinational trip, airports really can save you money. All airports in the United States are certainly focused on optimizing safety because millions of people are moving through our airports every day of the week. Be smart while you travel: Make sure you follow travel safety tips while you are on your trip. The Airport Authority always offers tips for travelers and you should always follow them for smooth traveling. Air travel is still growing and the key to successful air travel is planning, preparation and communication because it is such big business and can easily become a nightmare. Happy Traveling

Making Air Travel A Breeze: Part 3 - Enjoying The Ride

So, you've made it through security and are ready to get your vacation under way. Unfortunately, you still have a long flight to sit through. Yet, flying doesn't have to be a miserable experience - even if you are traveling with children. Here are some travel tips to help your whole family enjoy your time in the air.As "airline food" isn't exactly a mouthwatering phrase, it is a good idea to pack some food in your carry-on bag. While it may be difficult to pack an entire meal, there are plenty of healthy snacks that can fight your hunger. Start with healthy items like dried fruit and granola. If you are looking for a little more protein, add some jerky to your bag. If you have plenty of healthy options in your bag, you can more easily resist the urge to munch on the less-healthy fare aboard the flight.Keep in mind that the air inside of airplane cabins is always very dry. As a result, you might experience a thirst that can't be quenched by the irregular, less than generous drink service. An extra bottle of water or juice in your carry-on bag can go a long ways towards eliminating this discomfort. If you are one of the many who experience motion sickness, consider taking a pill before boarding the plane. For international flights to the Caribbean or elsewhere, a motion sickness medication may also help you to sleep through much of the flight, allowing you to awake rested and relaxed at your destination. You have to try your best to relax. Everyone has a different outlet for relaxation, so here is a list of activities to keep your stress at a minimum - whatever your interests may be: If you have a laptop computer, you can easily listen to music, watch DVDs or even get some work done. Just make sure you charge your batteries before flying. While MP3 players are nice, you don't need the newest gadget to zone out airplane noise. You can plug noise-canceling headphones into any type of portable music player. Books and magazines are great ways to pass the time. If you find the noise irritating, you could even put on noise-canceling headphones without music and eliminate most distractions. Simple games like crosswords and sudokus can alleviate stress and exercise your mind. One of the best tips for air travel with children is to secure seats in the front row of the cabin. In the front row of seats, your family will be granted some extra space and privacy - luxuries that are especially helpful when flying with infants or toddlers. If you have toddlers, you should also find it easier to let your children play, stretch or wander a little at the front of the aircraft. When flying with children internationally, most travel professionals recommend non-stop flights. Non-stop flights can be helpful as they allow your children to sleep uninterrupted and prevent potentially stressful hours of flight changes. Additionally, your kids will certainly be happy to arrive at your vacation destination as soon as possible. However, there are some benefits to taking breaks between flights. For instance, if you are flying to the Caribbean from the northern U.S., your children might become impatient on such a long flight. With a brief layover in a southern city, you can relieve some of your family's stress from being cooped up for a whole day. A break between flights will also allow you to pick up snacks and drinks, while your children can stretch and walk around freely for a little while. You should also make sure that you pack all the things your children might need in a carry-on bag. This includes everything from food and medications to extra clothing and a blanket. Older children will probably be entertained by many of the items on the adult list above, but also consider packing items like stuffed animals and art materials. You should try to avoid toys with small parts - such as board games, building blocks and model kits - and your child's noisier playthings. If all else fails, just remind your family that you are all en route to a wonderful Caribbean vacation.

In international adoptions this is not the case. For more info see http://www.childadoptionguide.org/Child_Adoption.html on child adoption domestically. In conclusion, there are pros and cons to both international adoption and domestic adoption, hopefully this article has given you a better understanding to know which option will be best suited to you and your lifestyles. International adoption may be a more expensive, lengthy process and perhaps have some language difficulties; but there are also a lot more children available, especially of different races or cultures, and the requirements are generally not as stringent and the birth mother won't change her mind about placing her child with you.

Traveling on International Flights With Infants

Traveling with infants is always a challenge, more so on long international flights. Some parents in order to keep their infant safe and secure during take off and landing will spend extra money to purchase a child's fare and therefore a seat for their baby so he or she can be secured in a car seat on the aircraft. A child's fare typically costs 65 or 75 percent of an adult ticket, whereas an infant ticket costs only 10 percent. However, not all airlines will allow parents to use a car seat on board. This depends upon the regulations of the country in which the airline is registered.Alitalia is one such airline. Italian regulations do not allow them to secure infants in a car seat on board their aircraft. Passengers who purchased a child's fare expecting to use a car seat will be required to purchase a new infant's ticket at check in and then attempt to refund the child's ticket through the original agency that issued it. This is not always successful as ticket rules have changed and most tickets are non-refundable.As Alitalia is a member of the Sky Team Alliance you may purchase a ticket which shows a flight number of one of the other team members but which is actually operated by Alitalia. If this is the case the Alitalia regulations take precedence.Other members of the Sky Team are Air France, Aero Mexico, Delta Air Lines, Korean Air Lines and Czech Airlines. As Alitalia only flies across the Atlantic from the USA this potential problem would not arise to Korean Air Lines or Aero Mexico destinations. On Alitalia The passenger traveling with an infant will be allowed to have a stroller or car seat to hold the infant until actual flight boarding. At that point, the stroller/car seat will be tagged and checked in at the gate.On all other Sky Team flights the passenger traveling with an infant will be allowed to have a stroller for the infant until actual flight boarding. At that point, the stroller will be tagged and checked in at the gate. Only a car seat will be allowed on the aircraft if a seat has been purchased for the infant. At this time we are not aware of any of the other Alliances, Star or One World, not permitting a child's fare and a seat to be purchased for an infant. However, we recommend that you check with the airline before purchasing in order to avoid problems at check in - after all it is stressful enough traveling with children without adding to it.Less2Fly.com offers cheap international airfares using airline ticket consolidators.

Travel to Madrid: Europe's Eldest Infant

Madrid may have been full of life by 1200 A.D. but it was not until 1979 that the capital city of Spain held its first free and democratic elections. The tumultuous tribulations of the 20th century have left a distinct flavor about the art, attitude and culture in Madrid. Visitors will find a thriving and exuberant local population proud and eager to share its resilient, if not neglected, history with the world. The modern heart and soul of Spain is central to the entire Iberian Peninsula, making Madrid the ideal place to initiate your Spanish adventure. Madrid is also rich with Moorish heritage as it was a contentious battleground between the Islamic and Christian Empires for much of the modern era. A stroll through Barrio de la Morera (Moorish Quarter) invokes an essence of Medieval Madrid through ornate Islamic architecture and hidden plazas. The art and architecture of Madrid also speaks of the temporary but influential Habsburg and Bourbon Rules. Museum Hop 'Til You DropMadrid is the internationally celebrated home of Spain's most prominent art collections. The Museo del Prado houses the world's largest and most prized collection featuring over 8,600 master works by Velzquez, Goya, El Greco, Ribera, Raphael, Botticelli, Fra Anglico, and Rembrandt, to name a few. Since 1819, the collection has been moved twice - during the Spanish Civil War and WWII - and has sustained immaculate condition. The Prado is also a work of art in its own right, designed by famed 18th century architect Juan de Villanueva. For the grandeur and curious intricacies of contemporary Spanish art, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia is a crucial visit. Once you have managed to overcome the awe of Picasso's Guernica, make sure to explore the fascinating world of Spanish photography, sculpture and film along with an incredible collection of Kandinsky, Mir and Dal. Finally, take a journey through royal Madrid at the Palacio Real. The 2800-room palace is no longer inhabited by the royal family, but the walls are lined with elaborate frescos and original artwork by the likes of El Greco and Goya. Stop by the two beautiful gardens and get your fix of ancient apothecary remedies in the Farmacia Real.Madrid in Present TenseIn Madrid it is easy to leave history behind and become immersed in the boisterous blooming lifestyle that fills the streets. The pulse of Madrid's beating heart can be found in the Plaza Mayor, the town square built in 1619 by Juan Gmez de Mora. Although it's unlikely you'll be able to throw stones at heretics here anymore, console yourself with an alfresco drink and pastry at one of the many cafes. For the resilient shopper, do not miss the Sunday Rastro flea market along the Calle de la Ribera de Curtidos, where bargain hunters and pack-rats alike will be in seventh heaven. Travel to Madrid for the perfect beginning to your Spanish vacation. Many captivating destinations lie just beyond the city, including the world heritage town of Alcala de Henares, the royal Aranjuez and the picturesque mountain town of Manzanares El Real.
